It’s always a treat when you see joints laced with a “Produced by Thanks Joey” tag, so On Beats is a treasure as it features 13 tracks worth of nothing but Joey’s vivid, enigmatic and ethereal instrumentation. If you feel like going on a journey through sound, load On Beats into the tape deck and close your eyes. It won’t be long before the music hits all your bodies.
“Ancestors” gets a unique visual treatment, coming to life thanks to the animation of Neslihan Ramzi. The conceptual video finds its foundation in Karagöz ve Hacivat, a Turkish shadow puppet medium dating back to the Ottoman Empire. Bringing these forms into the modern times, “Ancestors” is like the great escape soundtrack as the drawings look for means of removing themselves from today’s world. It’s trippy animation, but never overbearing or “psychedelic” – rather, through sound and animation, Joey and Ramzi manifest the twists, turns and morphing of the puppets in a wondrously elegant and meaningful fashion.
On Beats is available now on all major streaming platforms.
