From the sounds of it, Sol started the year with some pretty lofty plans and goals. Like most of us, 2020 threw up a little speed bump on those OG visions but that doesn’t mean the Seattle-representative won’t be liberating some fresh tunes from the vault as we roll through the last legs of summer. Alongside his longtime partners in sound Elan Wright and Nima Skeemz, Zilla comes through with “Oh Yeah.” The new record is enveloped in a striking calmness – it, quite literally, feels like the calm before the storm. Without getting any hopes up or setting expectations, here’s to some wishful thinking that Sol has more on the way.
In the meantime, “Oh Yeah” juxtaposes that cool, calm and collected aura with some vibrant strokes of emotive passion. Don’t let the relaxed essence fool you: Sol hasn’t been kicking back all year letting the days slip by. With his first release since “Stuck On You,” listeners get reacquainted quite quickly with the characteristically slick delivery and clever prose the PNW-based Sol has become favorably known for. As the ongoing wildness of the world saturates our daily lives, the timely “Oh Yeah” offers up a little bit of positive focus and direction amongst the melancholy.
Skeemz and Wright do what they do best, absolutely wrapping Sol’s prose and flow in the rolling tide of their instrumentation. The production duo manage to add an engaging level of depth and emotion to “Oh Yeah” while the soundscape still remains rather simple, which leaves plenty of room for the abundant punchlines and bars to resonate.
And, by the way, this diabetic popped at the insulin reference!
