She’s been one of our favorites since the and the Mixtape days, so it’s always a pleasure to open our ears to something new from the New Zealand-born and LA-based Janine. With people everywhere (hopefully) keeping themselves occupied at home, the ethereal songstress took to IG Live last night for a wonderful quarantine concert and today she liberates a moving cover of Chaka Kahn’s “Ain’t Nobody.”
Of course, Janine isn’t the first artist to take Kahn’s classic for a spin, but she certainly brings her own bit of unique life to the record. And teamwork stays making the dream work, so Janine called on Joshua McClanahan, Jonathan Holmes and Gordon Sran to help bring “Ain’t Nobody” to an atmospheric existence as she floats over and between their guitar, keys and slick mixing. With many hats atop her head, Janine handled the artwork herself (s/o Deb for the photog skillz) and collaborated with Sran to engineer the “Ain’t Nobody” flip.
From the moment you press play, the wonderful layers of the cover emerge. And it’s an emotive trip throughout the duration of “Ain’t Nobody,” the depth of Janine’s vocals leading the way. As Janine’s enchanting delivery tugs on your heart, the production casts a jarring embrace over the singer, resulting in a powerful and multidimensional listening experience. Take some time to set the energy in your room, dim the lights and ignite some incense and candles. Then press play and close your eyes, allowing the enticing landscape of the song to immerse your psyche and take your head and heart through the layered adventure of “Ain’t Nobody.”
