Despite sharing the powerful and revealing Moral of the Story: Chapter 1 in the spring, Ashe has already started rolling out new musical adventures with the world. After liberating “In Disguise” last month, the California-based songstress returns with her latest offering, the aptly titled “Cold In California.”
Supported by enchanting strings and soft percussion that comes courtesy of FINNEAS and Noah Conrad, Ashe glides through the new record, lacing the instrumentation with her airy delivery. Merging vintage sounding vocals with a uniquely modern essence of soul, “Cold In California” shines through the somber nature of the song thanks to the wondrous storytelling on display from Ashe. The new music comes to life as vibrant, enigmatic scenes are animated by Ashe’s sharp songwriting. While she’s singing about the place she calls home, one gets a sense that California serves as both the muse and the metaphor, with “Cold In California” becoming an honest look in the mirror for Ashe.
What people choose to see, focus on and desire out of another person – or out of themselves – is in a constant battle with what exists beneath the layers, masks and illusions. There is simultaneously no “perfect” and no “imperfect,” there just is – and that “is” is a combination of highs and lows, love and despair. As we travel through our existence here in the physical, it becomes strikingly evident that nothing is simply one sided. There are levels, dimensions and depth encompassing all parts of our lives, including the ways we feel about and view ourselves – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
It may get cold in California, but we wouldn’t appreciate the warmth unless we felt the chilling lows. In life, we need the storms so the sun shines brighter on our blessings.
“Cold In California” is available now on all major streaming platforms.
